theIDEAL CUTdiamond

TOLKOWSKY is the most famous name in diamond cutting and the inventor of the Ideal Cut diamond. Mathematically designed to optimal proportions and symmetry, the Ideal Cut maximizes the 3 elements of light in the diamond: Fire, Brilliance and Sparkle, the secret to unlocking its true beauty.
In 1919, Marcel Tolkowsky invented the proportions for the Ideal Cut round brilliant diamond. He discovered that a diamond’s beauty could be measured by the amount of light that is reflected internally and externally. He calculated a diamond’s “Ideal” proportions so that maximum light would reflect through the top of the diamond. His parameters became known as the Ideal Cut diamond and became the diamond industry’s standard for cut perfection. In 2009, Jean Paul Tolkowsky continued the family legacy by perfecting the Ideal Cut with his introduction of the TOLKOWSKY Ideal Cut Princess. True to its heritage, this diamond is brilliantly beautiful.
Ideal Cut diamonds are rare. In fact, very few of the world’s diamonds are ideal cut and even fewer of those achieve TOLKOWSKY’s very high light performance rating. To achieve the utmost beauty and precision, TOLKOWSKY Ideal Cut diamonds take over twice as long to cut vs. standard cut diamonds, requiring skill and meticulous quality control throughout the cutting process.
For 200 years, this legacy of craftsmanship and pursuit of perfection continues. In purchasing a TOLKOWSKY Ideal Cut diamond, you can feel proud in knowing you’re buying into in a centuries-long family tradition of true excellence.

It is the cut that is primarily responsible for beauty of a diamond as it determines how light behaves within a stone. The proportion and symmetry in TOLKOWSKY’s Ideal Cut maximizes the 3 elements of light in the diamond: Fire, Brilliance and Sparkle, the secret to unlocking its true beauty.

Many diamonds naturally contain a hint of color. It is the presence of color that determines the color grade that a stone is given. TOLKOWSKY diamonds are available from D to I color, meaning that they are white to the naked eye.
TOLKOWSKY Ideal Cut diamonds are cut to such perfection that any natural color in the diamond is harder to see because of the amount of light being reflected from the stone.
Inclusions are nature marks that occur inside a diamond when it is formed, giving it a unique character. TOLKOWSKY select their stones so that any inclusions present do not impair the beauty of the diamond. The Ideal Cut facet arrangement allows maximum light refraction so inclusions are much harder to see.

TOLKOWSKY diamonds are available in sizes from 0.20 carats to 4.00 carats and above.

As a seventh generation diamantaire, Jean-Paul Tolkowsky not only embodies the Tolkowsky Family Legacy but is also a diamond cutting authority himself. Below Jean-Paul answers some Frequently Asked Questions to help you in your search for the ideal diamond for your special someone!

Buying a diamond can be very intimidating, and I think a jeweler should not only make the process easier but also enjoyable. Our retailer partners in the US & UK are dedicated to educating every guest and working with them to pick out the perfect ring – the one that will reflect their unique relationship.
In terms of evaluating your options, having an understanding of the 4 C’s – Cut, Clarity, Color and Carat – is obviously helpful. I would also encourage anyone looking to purchase a diamond to ensure they know what each of the 4 C’s means to them – what is most important in the diamond they will eventually select?
At TOLKOWSKY we have long understood that when looking for beauty, the answer is CUT. It is the only one of the 4 C’s that is impacted by man and is responsible for the diamond’s shape and beauty –it truly unlocks the light within the diamond. One of our brand's pillars is the superiority of our diamond cut, meaning that each and every one of our ideal cuts performs at the highest standards. Not only that but all of our jewelry creations are carefully designed to showcase the diamond to its best advantage so customers can truly appreciate the perfect combination of brilliance, fire and overall sparkle.
Our Ideal Cut diamond achieves the perfect combination of Brightness, Fire and Sparkle. It is incredibly rare. Because of its proportions, our Ideal Cut diamonds are brighter and more brilliant than regular cut diamonds. They have very high light performance grades, outperforming standard brilliant cut diamonds.
Because of the craftsmanship required to achieve the perfect proportions of the Ideal Cut, we must begin the cutting process with a larger diamond. To achieve the utmost beauty and precision, TOLKOWSKY Ideal Cut diamonds take over twice as long to cut vs. standard cut diamonds, requiring skill and meticulous quality control throughout the cutting process.
Our focus always remains the precision of the cut so the carat size does not always factor into the time it takes to create a finished piece.
